RIP James Victor "Vic" Chesnutt
Wir erweisen einem der großen Songwriter der letzten 20 Jahre die letzte Ehre
Am 26. Dezember 2009 ereilte uns die traurige Nachricht, dass Vic Chesnutt, einer der großen Songwriter der letzten 20 Jahre, nicht mehr unter uns weilt. Er lag seit der Einnahme einer Überdosis an Muskelentspannungsmedikamenten knapp eine Woche zuvor im Krankenhaus im Koma und verstarb dort am ersten Weihnachtsfeiertag im Alter von nur 45 Jahren im Kreise seiner Familie und seiner Freunde.
Ende der 80er Jahre war es Michael Stipe von R.E.M. der in einem kleinen Club in Athens, Georgia, dem Heimatort der beiden, ein Konzert von Vic Chesnutt besuchte und sein Talent erkannte. Fortan förderte er den Musiker, der seit einem schweren Autounfall mit 18 Jahren teilweise gelähmt war und im Rollstuhl saß. 1990 veröffentlichte Vic Chesnutt mit Michael Stipe als Produzenten sein Debütalbum „Little“ auf Texas Hotel. In den nächsten knapp 20 Jahren nahm er ganze 17 Studioalben auf und kollaborierte mit zahlreichen Musikern, u. a. Lambchop, Elf Power, Widespread Panic.
2007 erschien mit „North Star Deserter“ Vics erstes Album beim kandischen Kultlabel Constellation Records. Zusammen mit der Postrock-Combo „Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band“, Musikern von „Godspeed You! Black Emperor“ und Fugazi's Guy Picciotto hatte Vic Chesnutt das Album zuvor im legendären Studio „Hotel2Tango“ in Montreal aufgenommen. Seine immer schon sehr ernsten und traurigen Songs wurden durch den typischen Constellation-Sound zu epischen, düsteren Geschichten über das Leben, den Tod und die kleinen Freuden des Alltags.
„The Grown-Up Noise“, eine Indie-Band aus Boston beschreiben in ihrem Song „Vic Chesnutt“ passend: „I wish I could write a Song like Vic Chesnutt“. Wir blicken zurück auf ein Leben voll musikalischer Höhepunkte und persönlicher Tragödien. Wir lassen Freunde und Mitmusiker musikalisch zu Wort kommen und möchten diesem wunderbaren Musiker unsere letzte Ehre erweisen.
